Prayagraj Narendra Giri, President of the Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad and Mahant of Prayagraj’s Bade Hanuman temple, was discovered dead inside his Baghambari Gaddi Math room on Monday, police said.
According to authorities, a claimed suicide note was discovered in the room, naming his pupil, Anand Giri, and two others as the perpetrators of the heinous act. Senior police officers such as IG Prayagraj Range KP Singh and SSP Sarvshrestha Tripathi arrived at the scene. At around 5.25 p.m., police received a call from the Ashram notifying them that Giri was found hanging in his room at the Baghambari Gaddi Math guest house, according to Inspector General of Police KP Singh. Giri appeared to have committed suicide by hanging himself at first glance. His math students alerted him that the room was locked from the inside, according to IG (Prayagraj range). As word of his death spread in Prayagraj, a large crowd gathered outside Baghambari Gaddi Math. PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed their condolences on the loss. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences on his death and praised him for his work in unifying saints from many streams while remaining true to spiritual traditions. Adityanath described his death as a “great loss” to the spiritual world, and hoped that God would give his disciples and followers the strength they needed to bear the loss. Giri had a falling out with his disciple and noted yoga guru Swami Anand Giri, who was then the “Chote Mahant” of Bade Hanuman temple. As a result, Anand Giri was expelled from Baghambari Math and Niranjani Akhara in May 2021. Anand Giri was accused of continuing to maintain ties with his family in contravention of the sanyasi’s code of conduct. He was also accused of financial irregularities involving the temple money, which the secretary of the Akhara, Mahant Swami Ravindra Puri, corroborated at the time.
Narendra Giri had filed a complaint against Anand Giri in this regard, prompting the action. Within a few days, however, Anand Giri had formally asked Narendra Giri and the Panch Parmeshwar of the Shri Panchayati Akhara Niranjani for forgiveness. Narendra Giri had then pardoned him and abolished Anand Giri’s restriction on entering the Bade Hanuman temple and the Baghambari Math, which had been imposed on him when he was expelled.
