On the same day that Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Congress’s Punjab unit chief, abruptly resigned, former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar joined the party, and Independent Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani said he extended “full support” and would run for state office under the Congress symbol in 2022. Mevani said today that joining the Congress, which he announced on Saturday, could lead to his disqualification as an MLA. “As an Independent MLA, I am unable to formally join the party. It’s critical that I support this (Congress) ideology. He added, “The formality could happen in the future as well.”
Mr. Kumar and Mr. Mevani’s actions come at a time when the Congress has seen a number of prominent leaders leave in recent months. Sushmita Dev, the former president of the Mahila Congress, has joined the Trinamool Congress, while Jitin Prasada, a former Union Minister, has joined the BJP. Luizinho Faleiro, a veteran Goa Congress leader, resigned from the party yesterday.
